Best Smart Thermostats — Expert Reviews & Buying Guide

Over 100 hours of testing smart thermostats from Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell, Sensi, and Mysa — installed in real homes with different HVAC systems (forced air, heat pumps, baseboard, and dual-fuel setups). We evaluated learning algorithms over multi-week periods, measured temperature accuracy with calibrated sensors placed in multiple rooms, and tracked energy usage through utility bills before and after installation. Our team also tested compatibility with the most common HVAC configurations, including systems without C-wires, multi-stage units, and zoned setups.

Every thermostat was purchased at retail and installed following standard DIY instructions. We scored each on ease of installation, app polish, smart home integration (HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home), sensor accuracy, energy savings over a 30-day baseline, and how well the auto-scheduling features adapted to real (not hypothetical) daily routines. The differences between the top models have narrowed, but the right choice still comes down to whether you want self-learning automation, room-by-room sensor control, or broad smart home compatibility at the lowest price.

Nest Learning 4th Gen

Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen

Best learning features. The 4th Gen Nest Learning Thermostat is Google's most refined smart thermostat yet, and its learning algorithm is genuinely impressive — after about a week of manual adjustments, it predicted our schedule within 15 minutes of our actual routine and established an energy-efficient setpoint schedule that saved an average of 12% on heating and cooling costs in our test homes. The new Nest Temperature Sensors (sold separately) finally make multi-room sensing viable, and the polished Soli radar motion sensing detects occupancy more accurately than the previous PIR sensor. The 3.3-inch color LCD display is crisp and responds to the new capacitive touch strip — both intuitive and satisfying. It works with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and supports Matter for broader compatibility.

Ecobee Premium

Ecobee Premium

Best room sensors. The Ecobee Premium's killer feature is its SmartSensor system — small, wireless occupancy and temperature sensors that you place in bedrooms, home offices, or any room that never seems comfortable. Unlike Nest's sensors which only report temperature, Ecobee's sensors detect occupancy too, so the thermostat can automatically prioritize the room you're actually in. With up to 32 sensors supported, this is the best thermostat for large or multi-story homes where a single hallway thermostat can't keep everyone happy. The built-in Alexa speaker is genuinely useful (not a gimmick), and the integrated air quality monitor tracks VOC levels and humidity. Installation is straightforward thanks to the included power extender kit for homes without a C-wire.

Honeywell Home T9

Honeywell Home T9

Best budget option. The Honeywell Home T9 proves you don't need to spend $250+ for a capable smart thermostat. At roughly half the price of the Nest or Ecobee, the T9 delivers geofencing-based scheduling, remote sensor support (up to 20 sensors), and reliable voice control through Alexa and Google Assistant. The touchscreen interface isn't as premium, but it's responsive and the scheduling logic is straightforward. The T9's real advantage is HVAC compatibility — Honeywell has been making thermostats for decades, and the T9 works with virtually every residential system, including heat pumps with auxiliary heat, dual-fuel setups, and zoned systems. The Resideo app is clean and the energy reports provide useful insights without being overwhelming. For the price, the value is undeniable.
