1. Our Promise
Reviews by Technologies IA exists for one reason: to help you make smarter buying decisions. Every editorial decision we make flows from that mission. Our readers come first, always. Here is what we promise:
- We are 100% independent. No manufacturer, brand, or retailer has any editorial control over our content. We do not accept payment for reviews, ratings, or placement in any "best of" list.
- We buy everything we test. We purchase every product at retail price using our own funds. We do not accept free review units, loaner units, or evaluation samples from manufacturers. This ensures our experience matches what you would experience as a consumer.
- We tell you what we find — good and bad. Our reviews include both strengths and weaknesses. We do not sugarcoat flaws or exaggerate positives. If a product has a significant issue, we say so clearly.
- We test in the real world. Products are evaluated in real homes, offices, and everyday conditions — not in a sterile lab. We test with the firmware and software that you will use, not pre-release versions.
- We update our reviews. When products change through firmware updates, new competitors enter the market, or prices shift significantly, we revisit and update our reviews to keep them accurate and useful.
2. How We Test Products
Every product on this Site goes through the same rigorous testing process. We do not make exceptions for any product, category, or brand. Our process has four stages:
We buy the product at full retail price from a standard retailer — just like you would. No manufacturer discounts, no review samples, no special treatment.
Every product is used in real-world conditions for at least two weeks. Many products are tested for 30 days or longer, especially complex devices like robot vacuums and security systems.
We score every product against the same 6 dimensions (see below). Scores are reviewed by at least two team members before publication to ensure consistency.
When possible, we test products side-by-side against direct competitors. For example, we run robot vacuums through identical obstacle courses and measure cleaning performance on the same messes.
We revisit products after 3-6 months of continued use. Some issues — like battery degradation, software bugs, or build quality problems — only emerge with extended use.
We monitor firmware updates, product revisions, and price changes. When something material changes, we update the review and flag the change for readers.
Our testing is designed to reflect how actual consumers use products. We do not use specialized test equipment or laboratory conditions unless that is relevant to the product type (e.g., we measure decibel levels for robot vacuums and keyboard latency for mechanical keyboards). But the core of every review is real-world usage: we set up the product, use it daily for our intended purposes, and document what works and what doesn't.
3. Scoring Methodology
Every product is evaluated across six equally weighted dimensions, each scored from 1 to 10. The overall rating is the average of these six scores, rounded to one decimal place.
The 6 Dimensions
- Build Quality (10%): Materials, construction, fit and finish, and perceived durability. Does the product feel well-made? Will it last? We examine seams, joints, fasteners, and overall structural integrity.
- Performance (25%): How well does the product fulfill its primary function? For a robot vacuum, this means cleaning performance across floor types. For a keyboard, it means typing feel, latency, and responsiveness. This is the highest-weighted dimension because performance is why you buy a product.
- Value (15%): Performance relative to price. Is the product fairly priced compared to competitors? Does it deliver more or less than you would expect at its price point? A $50 product that performs surprisingly well can score higher in value than a $500 product that is merely good.
- Ease of Use (20%): Setup, daily operation, and maintenance. How long does it take to get the product working out of the box? Is the companion app intuitive? Is ongoing maintenance straightforward? We consider the experience of a non-technical user, not just power users.
- Features (15%): The breadth and quality of features relative to the product category. Does it have the features you would expect? Are there standout features that competitors lack? Are features implemented well, or are they gimmicks?
- Reliability (15%): Stability, consistency, and long-term dependability. Does the product work reliably day after day? Are there recurring bugs, connectivity drops, or performance degradation over time? This dimension benefits from our long-term follow-up testing.
Star Ratings Translation:
- 5.0 stars (9.5–10): Exceptional. Best-in-class in every dimension. Rarely awarded.
- 4.5–4.9 stars (8.5–9.4): Excellent. Highly recommended with minor caveats.
- 4.0–4.4 stars (7.5–8.4): Very good. Solid performance with some trade-offs.
- 3.5–3.9 stars (6.5–7.4): Good. Functional but with notable limitations.
- 3.0–3.4 stars (5.5–6.4): Average. Does the job but has significant drawbacks.
- Below 3.0 stars: Below average. We generally do not recommend products in this range.
4. How We Rank Products
When we publish "best of" lists, top picks, or product comparisons, the rankings are determined by our overall scores, with the following considerations:
- Primary sorting is by score: Products are ranked by their overall rating, from highest to lowest.
- Value-adjusted ranking: In some categories, we may adjust rankings to reflect exceptional value. A product that scores 8.2 but costs half as much as the 8.5-rated product may appear higher in certain "best for most people" contexts.
- Category-specific criteria: For targeted lists (e.g., "Best Budget Robot Vacuums" or "Best Keyboards for Programmers"), we apply category-specific weighting. For example, value may be weighted higher in a budget roundup, and ease of use may be weighted higher for products aimed at non-technical users.
- No paid placement: No manufacturer can pay to appear in any ranking, "best of" list, or comparison table. Rankings are determined solely by our testing and scoring.
Whenever we recommend one product over another in a comparison, we explain our reasoning so you can understand the trade-offs and decide based on your own priorities.
5. Corrections Policy
We are committed to accuracy. When we make a mistake — whether it is a factual error, a pricing error, or an omission — we correct it promptly and transparently.
- Correcting errors: When an error is identified, we update the content and note the correction at the top or bottom of the page, including the date and nature of the correction.
- Reader-submitted corrections: If you spot an error in any of our reviews or content, please email us. We investigate every correction request and respond within 5 business days.
- Retractions: In rare cases where a significant error cannot be adequately corrected, we will retract and replace the content with a clear explanation of why.
6. Conflicts of Interest
We maintain strict policies to prevent conflicts of interest from affecting our editorial content:
- No free products: Our reviewers do not accept free products, review units, or evaluation samples. All products are purchased at retail price.
- No sponsored reviews: We do not accept payment to review specific products, nor do we allow manufacturers to preview or approve reviews before publication.
- No gifts or trips: Our reviewers do not accept gifts, travel, or hospitality from manufacturers or brands whose products we cover.
- Personal relationships: Reviewers recuse themselves from reviewing products from companies where they have a personal relationship with an employee or stakeholder.
- Financial interests: Reviewers may not own stock in or have any financial interest in companies whose products they review. If a reviewer has any relevant financial interest, it is disclosed in the review.
Any reviewer who violates these policies is subject to immediate removal from our review team.
7. Editorial Independence Statement
Reviews by Technologies IA is an independent publication. Our editorial content is produced without input from manufacturers, retailers, advertisers, or affiliate partners. No external party has the right to approve, preview, or influence any review, rating, or ranking before publication.
Our affiliate relationships — including the Amazon Associates Program — are separate from our editorial operations. We maintain a complete separation between our editorial team and any commercial relationships. The editorial team makes all decisions about what to review, how to test it, and what to recommend. These decisions are final and independent.
If you ever have concerns about our editorial independence or suspect that outside influence has affected a review, please contact our editorial team directly. We take such concerns seriously and will investigate thoroughly.
Trust is earned through consistent action, not just words on a page. Every review, every rating, and every recommendation on this Site is a reflection of our commitment to honest, independent, reader-first journalism. Thank you for trusting us with your buying decisions.
